RAM

RAM (Random-Access Memory) refers to a computer's operating memory. This is type of memory stores data currently being used. It allows you to read or write data to any memory location, which makes it extremely fast. However, all data collected is lost when the computer is turned off. Therefore, it serves as a temporary repository for computer work, laptops, and also mobile phones and tablets.

Storage Size

RAM size is reported in gigabytes (GB). A minimum of 4GB of RAM is needed for the system to run smoothly, and the standard size is 8GB. We recommend 16GB or more of operating memory when working with more demanding graphics programs.

Type

DDR memory is mostly used in all laptops today. This abbreviation stands for Double Data Rate. The DDR3 and the latest DDR4 are most commonly used.

  • DDR3 - this was introduced in 2007 and is the successor to the older DDR2. In comparison to its predecessor, it can achieve higher frequencies at reduced voltages, which prolongs laptop battery life. The usual operating frequencies are 1333MHz, 1600MHz and 1866MHz, but there are also faster modules available.
  • DDR4 - this is the direct successor to the DDR3. The first DDR4 modules were available in 2014. The DDR4 also has increased frequencies and reduced operating voltages. Conventional modules work at a frequency above 2GHz, and the most powerful modules can run up to 4,266MHz.

Frequency

Increased frequency increases the data transfer rate. However, the overall performance is not reflected in the memory frequency alone. The exception is the performance of an integrated graphics card, where the memory frequency of the laptop significantly affects the graphic performance.
